Unjustified gift of Capitalism

Have you ever thought about all the zeros in front of our military’s annual budget? What about our medical preparedness for pandemic incidents?

Why was the greatest country on the planet not prepared for this unprecedented crisis in the 21st century? Our government always scares us with threats from enemies to easily approve billions of dollars for our military budget, convincing us of how they protect America from foreign enemies.

The financial and emotional damage that humankind is experiencing in our nation is shocking. This sudden attack happened while Americans were unprepared and unfamiliar with problems they had never faced before due to the unwelcome Covid-19 virus. The question is: why were we not ready for it?

One reason could be that in America, we try to be efficient with our medical expenses, just like with everything else. We don’t have enough doctors and nurses, nor do we have enough ventilators and equipment to protect our ill people from this pandemic. Our government did not budget enough and did not prepare vigorously enough to fight this unexpected virus.

We are in a capitalist system that requires consistent or increased profits month after month and year after year.

I hope this unprecedented event or these horrific circumstances will wake up our lawmakers and prompt significant changes. The government needs to plan for a better future, even if it does not immediately benefit our medical industry to have extra equipment and staff.
